Best Man Loses Ring During Wedding Ceremony

Being best man is a job fraught with peril: is there anything worse than giving a bad toast, getting drunk, or doing both at the same time at your best friends wedding?

At St. Johns church in Surrey, south of London, during the wedding of Lewis Aubrey, 31, and Elizabeth Gray, 29, a 'pling' sound rang throughout the church, alarming everyone present.

"Was that the ring?” asked the priest, Nicholas Calver, who conducted the ceremony.

When the best man — the grooms brother, Matt Aubrey — sheepishly confirmed that it was, the ceremony was paused while the wedding party tried vainly to find it. At one point, 20 people were reportedly crawling on the floor, lifting carpets, dissecting flower displays and even digging through the best man's sporran, which is a fur pouch worn over a kilt.

The bride was in shock. "I was kind of just thinking, 'Oh, God, the show's got to go on. I want to get married,'” Gray said afterward.

It had taken Aubrey six months to search for just the right ring, and he wasnt about to let it go lightly. One photo shows Aubrey covering his mouth moments after the ring was dropped; another shows Aubrey, in his kilt, kneeling on the floor to find the ring.

After several minutes of fruitless searching, Gray's mother lent the couple her wedding ring and the ceremony continued.

"It kind of felt nice and it felt right to use my mum's because it means something,” Gray told ABC News .

But the real hero of the day was Calver.  Armed with a shovel and a flashlight, the priest told The Telegraph , he spent two hours looking for the missing ring, finally discovering it in a crack between a step and the altars raised dais. Calver rushed to the reception and found the embarrassed best man. Poking Matt Aubrey in the rib, Calver said, "I think you owe me a drink.”

The best man entered into the reception holding the ring aloft like Frodo from The Lord of the Rings , Gray told ABC News . Then the real ring was placed on her finger and the priest blessed the marriage again. "So I kind of got married twice,” she said.

Black Friday Flicks 5 Favorite Mall Movies

20/08/2014 18:32

No, seriously. What are you doing? It's the day after Thanksgiving. You should be enjoying a fabulous food coma with leftovers in the company of loved ones, not lining up like cattle to the slaughter for 10 percent off a cartload of gifts that your family would, frankly, probably trade in a heartbeat for a chance to spend a day off together. Besides, do you really want to be one more person encouraging a culture where stuff like this goes down, only to head home and post some hypocritical status message on your Facebook decrying "the commercialization of Christmas"? No, no you don't.

There are a surprising number of films that take place (almost) entirely in the setting of the all-American shopping center. My suggestion: pull on your fat pants, prepare for a Round Two battle with green bean casserole and tryptophan, and skip the shopping spree in favor of a "classic" (I use the term incredibly loosely) mall-set flick from the '70s, '80s, '90s or '00s. Bonus: no buyer's remorse.

The different installments of writer/director George A. Romero's Living Dead series (which kicked off with 1968's classic Night of ...) have been analyzed by many — including but not exclusively totally stoned film majors — as critiques of various aspects of American society. Honestly, you don't need a PhD or a bong to get the allegory in this installment, where a small, ragtag group of survivors attempt to stave off Zombie Armageddon by taking refuge in a shopping mall. If you're interested in a super academic take that includes phrases like "commodity fetishism," check this out . Otherwise, here's the abstract: it's a movie about hordes of empty-headed shells of humanity ambling through a mall and mindlessly devouring everything and everyone in their path. Happy Black Friday!

And now for something completely different stupid. In this Reagan era explosion of awfulness-slash-awesomeness, several horny couples decide to stay overnight in the furniture store where they all work. (Because: beer and firm mattresses.) Unfortunately, the newly installed super-duper high-tech mall security robots, which I wish looked exactly like this , decide to short circuit ( REFERENCE ) and go on a killing spree. Wacky! There are crunchy bangs and '80s-rific laser beams aplenty. And while Chopping Mall kinda flopped in theaters, it was part of a wave of mid-80s horror/sci-fi flicks that helped trail blaze the still-burgeoning home video market as fertile ground for the creation of successful cult hits. So it's sort of a seminal title, for those of us with extremely questionable taste in cheese.

Speaking of cheese, there aren't enough crackers in the world to accompany my love for this movie. I was obsessed with it as a kid — obsessed . And I still have, somewhere in my parents' attic, an early elementary school writing assignment that is basically my attempt at inserting myself into the narrative of what was every young boy's dream: discovering that the super-hot mannequin in the store window is actually the reincarnated spirit of an Egyptian princess, who comes to life after the mall closes and maybe, if you're lucky, will give you a little touch over in the bikini department. Magical. Kim Cattrall is expectedly foxy, Andrew McCarthy is typically adorable, and Meshach Taylor, as flamboyant window decorator Hollywood, is played by the movie for queeny laughs while still being treated lovingly, which was sort of progressive for '87. Also, five words: "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now." Fist pump.

Poor Mallrats . Writer/director Kevin Smith (who appears, as he usually does in his films, as the Silent Bob half of his stoner "Jay

Jane Pauley Gives Great Retirement Advice

19/08/2014 18:09

[ Life ] It was reunion time for the Today show when Matt Lauer, Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley got together to report the news. It was the second time the trio was reunited recently, as the first time was on Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, when they joined weatherman Al Roker for a back-in-the-day themed show.

Pauley was also there to promote her new book Your Life Calling: Reimagining the Rest of Your Life, which is about people rediscovering themselves in their latter years. The book is based on Pauleys occasional Today show segment entitled Life Reimagined.

In an interview with USA Today , the veteran newscaster said while writing her book and doing the Life Reimagined segments, she learned that many Baby Boomers still want to work after retirement, but they want to do something completely different.

What many of us are looking for at the other side of retirement is more work, but a different kind of work, she said. Its not starting up a new career necessarily, though some will. But we do want to stay productive, and some will need or desire a paycheck. Maybe we want to do it without a boss. Theres a lot of research about people our age as entrepreneurs.

Additionally, Pauley said that shes okay with not being that famous anymore, due to the fact that fame means something entirely different these days.

Fame used to be something one earned after decades of achievement, exposure, expertise, she noted. And today its happening so young for people like Justin Bieber. I had young fame and I was uncomfortable with it because it didnt feel earned. Im not apologetic anymore, at 63. Im fine with it [and] comfortable talking about I used to be famous without the self-consciousness of the 33-year old me.

And Pauley said she likes the term Reimagined over Reinvention, when it comes to deciding what to do after retirement, because the latter sounds like you only have one shot at figuring out what you want to do, which isnt the case. And she pointed to her own career as a good example.

Im still on television but the stories I tell are very different, and the way I tell them is very different, she said. While I have partners, I dont have a boss, and I really like that.

After PBR Will the Next Great Hipster Beer Please Stand Up

Pabst Blue Ribbon, the so-called nectar of the hipster gods , has been hip for longer than anyone could have possibly imagined. Now that PBRs popularity is mainstream and the beer has lost some of its authentic, cheap no-frills appeal, the assumption is that another beverage will take its place as the top hipster brew. But there are reasons why the next PBR might never come.

The research firm Restaurant Sciences recently released data indicating that not only had Pabst Blue Ribbon prices in bars and restaurants risen substantially — up over 10% from April 2012 to April 2013 — but that the entire category of cheap subpremium beer had gotten more expensive because of PBR. I believe the single biggest driver in subpremium-beer-price increases is indeed specifically PBR, Chuck Ellis, Restaurant Sciences president, told the Daily News . It has become quite fashionable.

Tons of publications jumped on the study and issued hipster-bashing headlines, usually to the effect of how PBR-loving hipsters ruin everything, even cheap beer. But wait a sec. PBR didnt just become hip recently. Its been years, in fact, since PBR emerged as the beer of choice of the bearded, Brooklyn-focused masses . In the New York Times Magazine , Rob Walker wrote of hipsters embracing PBR thanks to its nonmarketing marketing back in the early 2000s. Why would PBR prices be only spiking just now?

( MORE: My Beer Can Is Better Than Yours: Aluminum Can-ovations for Better Beer Drinking )

Well, its not clear Pabsts recent price hike is much of an anomaly at all. Restaurant Sciences only has data for a little over a year, so theres no way of telling if the latest price increase is unusual, or just part of a years-in-the-making trend. The recession gave inexpensive PBR an extra boost with budget-conscious drinkers, and its popularity allowed the company to increase prices in 2009 . Ad Age noted that in 2011 beer manufacturers raised the prices of several subpremium brands like Keystone Light mainly in order to help push consumers into trading up to slightly pricier, supposedly tastier brews like Bud and Coors.

So theres nothing particularly new about rising beer prices, even at the subpremium level. Also, while Restaurant Sciences data focuses on the price increases as percentages, its easy to see that the figures dont add up to big cash in terms of your bar tab. A 10% price increase sounds like a lot, but when were talking about a PBR draft that costs $2.50, that amounts to a bump of just 25¢. That $2.75 PBR is still way cheaper than the typical $5 or $6 craft pint. And none of those prices are as nonsensical as the absurd $10 or $11 charged for Bud Light in certain Manhattan whale restaurants.

In any event, as PBR has grown incrementally more expensive and increasingly mainstream, its been assumed that the beer will inevitably lose its hipster following. No product stays hip forever, and at seven years old, the Pabst boomlet is reaching a generational breaking point. Thats a quote from a Salon.com post — published in 2008 . In 2011, the Pabst Brewing Co. and its portfolio of working-class beers were sold and the headquarters shifted from the Midwest to Southern California, of all places. Many thought that the people drinking PBR because it is unsexy, unpretentious and blue-collar Midwest, in the words of the Chicago Tribune , would turn away from old-school brew now that it was perceived as a sellout.

And yet here we are, in 2013, discussing how PBRs popularity is responsible for pricing shifts throughout the entire beer industry, even as the craft-brewer movement continues to explode — and has changed the beer marketplace far more than Pabst.

( MORE: Trouble Brewing? The Craft Beer vs. Crafty Beer Catfight )

So why the fascination with PBR? And considering that hipsters shun the mainstream, why havent they turned their tastes elsewhere? Some would argue that some hipsters have, in fact, done just that. Several PBR sister brands — Old Style, Lone Star, National Bohemian — are often in the discussion concerning the next PBR. So are a few brews from the worlds largest beer companies, including Natural Light, Hamms and Miller High Life. Then there are regional beers such as Genesee, Narragansett and Yuengling; theyre all relatively cheap brews, and theyve all been mentioned by beer-industry experts as hipster favorites and potential contenders for PBRs crown.

Despite the fact that hipsters seem willing to pay top dollar for things like artisanal mayonnaise , cheap price is essential for any hipster beer, says Rene Reinsberg, the founder and CEO of the menu-advisory company Locu . In March, Locu published heat maps of hipster neighborhoods revealing the availability of PBR in bars and restaurants. Cheap signifies underdog, Reinsberg says. The underdog thing is important to this audience. If a beer is expensive, it doesnt fit the story. Hipsters are into adopting the underdog.

Such criteria would seem to rule out the possibility of a small craft brewer from becoming the next big hipster success story. Dont count craft out, though, says Restaurant Sciences Ellis. My own theory is that theres been such intense competition at the high-craft end, there is bound to be a fierce battle for the low end, he says. There are so many craft brewers out there, and theyre all trying to break through. There could be someone willing to trade volume for price.

Another wholly unscientific factor in a beers rise in popularity could be its nickname. It seems to help a beers street cred to have a code name or sorts, perhaps so the in the know crowd knows how to order at the bar, and how to recognize fellow enthusiasts. Pabst Blue Ribbon, of course, is shortened into PBR. Natty Boh (National Bohemian), UC (Utica Club), Natty Light, Genny and 'Gansett are a few of the others.

Speaking of 'Gansett, the Rhode Island beer appears to be one of the most overt in its pursuit of the hipster drinking crowd. The brand had been dead for a decade before new owners took over in 2005 , a time that just so happened to coincidence with PBRs rise. Since then, Narragansett has kept retail prices low — around $4.99 for a six-pack of 16-ouncers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic — while making other efforts to appeal to hipsters. Last summer, for instance, the company released retro Crush It Like Quint cans , named in honor of the memorable character who drank Narragansett (and crushed the can) in Jaws . The company website also features a 'Gansett Girl of the Week, who, in addition to enjoying the beer, is usually an enthusiast of some hipster activity like roller derby.

Mark Davidson, one of the founders of the beer-price-tracking site SaveOnBrew.com , says Narragansetts active targeting of hipsters could backfire. You can't set out to be the beer of choice for a counterculture, he explained via e-mail. Just like you can't set out to make a viral video.

Davidson says it is silly for hipsters to think they are fighting the power by drinking PBR, which is actually brewed by one of the worlds largest beer companies, but its equally silly for any company to try to advertise in a traditional way to this group of consumers, who in their minds don't want to bend to the will of corporate masters telling them what to drink.

( MORE: Too Cold for a Cold One? Big Beer Companies Blame Mother Nature for Slumping Sales )

Davidson isnt sold on any current beer as a replacement for PBR, or even on the concept that there will ever be another success story like Pabst over the past decade. Maybe it'll never happen again. Maybe the next wave will really be into whole milk and label the people who drink 2% as slaves to the corporate teat, he joked.

What he does know is that beer drinkers are a predominantly male group that tends to spend more time indoors, are less physically active, play more video games, spend more time on their smartphones, are enamored with smarts over looks and tend to be more cynical about their future and the future of the planet. And what beer will most appeal to them? One that hasn't been invented yet, said Davidson. But I bet a room of savvy marketers somewhere is thinking the exact same thing.

Sports Illustrated bikini model Kate Upton sparks a debate

18/08/2014 18:28

Others look down on the young woman's tabloid lifestyle, her romantic links to Kanye West and New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez and even the teeny-tiny size of her bikini bottom in the Sports Illustrated cover shot.

Upton's defenders say she has a right to party. To suggest she is fat, they say, is tantamount to promoting anorexia. Her fans insist that Kate's look is a healthier example for American girls, even if her beach attire indicates she can't distinguish between panties and a Post-it stuck to a strand of dental floss.

The point here is not to take sides in this debate or even imply it has any importance. The Kate Upton kerfuffle simply lends a little perspective to the current political campaign. Journalists have been covering every twitch and twist of the Republican nomination fight for months now, millions of dollars have been spent on attack ads and robo calls and the candidates have roamed the countryside shaking hands and calling each other names, yet the number of people who have taken part in primaries and caucuses compared with the number of Americans who have stayed away is about the same as the ratio of fabric to bare skin in Kate's beach shot.

For all the intensity of the presidential race thus far, there are still millions of folks who never bothered to tune in to any of the candidates' debates. But the YouTube video of Kate Upton dancing the Dougie in the bleachers at a ballgame has attracted more than 3.5 million views.

We may be in the midst of a titanic struggle for the soul of the country, but, in the land of the free, none of us are required to pay attention.

Microsoft Office 365 Personal Launches Today

14/08/2014 11:37

[ Life ] In another bold move to increase its market-share and win back its customer base, Microsoft has released a new installment of its most famous Office product. Prior to today, Microsoft had limited its Office products to two categories a $9.99 per month / $99.99 per year Office 365 Home Premium option and Office Online. Now, consumers are presented with a third, more affordable option Office 365 Personal .

Office 365 Personal will be offered to consumers for $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.

Fortunately for Office users, the downgrade in price does not come with a downgrade in product quality. The only difference between Office 365 Home and Office 365 Personal is storage, essentially. With Office 365 Home, one can download and install Office products on up to five different PCs or Macs and five different tablets. Office 365 Personal only allows one to install the product on one PC or Mac and one tablet. The only other difference comes with the amount of online cloud storage; with Office 365 Home, one has access to five, 20 GB of OneDrive cloud storage space, while Office 365 Personal only allows one access to one, 20 GB OneDrive cloud storage account.

Get the Office you love on the devices you love—including #iPad . Subscriptions start at $6.99 a month. #Office365 https://t.co/pTkDRiUwKt

Late last month, Microsoft announced another decision which made the world quite befuddled. For years, the biggest tech rivalry in the world has been between Microsoft and Apple. The two companies have completely different business and marketing strategies, and more mud has been slung throughout the history of this rivalry than perhaps any other in capitalist history. Its this antagonism between Microsoft and Apple that makes the decision for Microsoft to release Office for the iPad so intriguing.

While many may have wondered what Microsofts goal with this decision was, one cannot question the success of the move to allow Microsoft software to be featured on Apple products. Despite only being functional if one subscribed to the $99.99 per year Office 365 Home Premium service, Microsoft recorded immense success with its launch within the first week.

More than 12 million downloads of Word, Excel, PPT OneNote for #iPad from the @AppStore 3 #OfficeforiPad pic.twitter.com/iT2egNPDkj

looks like its a productive Friday for #iPad owners! pic.twitter.com/hjoDxxbp7c

Its this decision to launch Microsoft Office for the iPad which most likely led to the price drop for the service. With over 12 million users downloading the apps for Office within the first week of its launch, Microsoft was most likely simply pouncing on the opportunity to make more money with the old car-salesman trick of selling more product with less profit to generate greater overall revenue.

Perhaps it was this line of thinking which also led Microsoft to ditch its hard-lined Scroogled campaign and allow its Office Online services to be offered through the Google Chrome Web Store and be integrated with the Chrome OS featured on the Chromebook.

Simply put, all this move does is create hot-buttons for once to access Office Online quicker and easier. But, it displays a large paradigm shift away from anti-Google marketing and toward an even more pro-capitalist model of survival.

In the end, what does all of this mean for Microsoft? Unfortunately, it reeks of desperation for an outdated company to keep up with its competitors. While companies like Apple and Google are constantly innovating and developing its products to keep up with a modern age, Microsoft has consistently felt years behind by continuing to simply push revamped models of its older products. Perhaps the move to become more integrated in the online sphere and to simply become more software oriented will be the niche where Microsoft will find its home once again, allowing it to become more competitive and to introduce greater parity to the technological marketplace. Heres hoping.

Music that makes Fussball More Meaningful in Berlin

13/08/2014 19:14

Sean Gallup / Getty Images Berlin fans react to Germany's 1-2 loss against Italy at the Fanmeile public viewing at the Brandenburg Gate

Sean Gallup / Getty Images It is hard not to notice that Berlin has been in a state of "fuss ball"-frenzy. As one of my friends said, "Even if you aren't into football, and don't care who wins, you have no choice but to know." She was referring to the trumpets and blaring car horns that fill the night skies of Berlin after every win. Well, on June 22, Germany lost to Italy.

I have my own theory why Germany lost: Germany never had a good fuss ball song to begin with.

While trolling the net for some "fuss ball" songs, I came across the "official" UEFA 2012 soccer song. It's "Endless Summer" by an artist from Hamburg called Oceana. I saw her in an interview. I liked her vibe and her voice. I cannot say the same for the song- vapid lyrics over a repetitive beat

This sounds more like the filler song in a club mix from an Ibiza club in the wee hours of the morning after too many drinks. Worse, it has nothing to do with football. Perhaps the producers realized this at some point and tried to remedy this by inserting shots of cute hunks kicking soccer balls around. This, together with the booty-shaking bikini girls in island shots might easily distract you from the fact that this is the official football song.

After this impressive literary accomplishment, this verse follows:

Cliche and expected. Not what my old lyric writing teacher at Berklee College of Music would herald as strong songwriting. It does lull me back though- to the good old days of nursery - such as:

I find the nursery rhyme more interesting as a rhyme scheme because it has two words one might not necessarily expect, like "stout" (a nice descriptive term) and "spout" (who even uses that word?)

I think they need to consult me for better lyrics next time round. Here's my brilliant take! I can't compete with pricey video shots and the gorgeous Oceana, but I added a nice little grain effect here on my computer to help me look air-brushed and give the impression of being in a music video.

YouTube A flippant rewrite of the lyrics to "Endless Summer" by Anouschka

That one there (point in video indicatively) is my number one!

Well, that's my take on this years official fuss ball song. Have a good one! And...in case you happened to take all this seriously...please don't.
